Obesity and overweight are listed as the leading cause of death in our country, after COVID. It is thought of as a pandemic that affects a large part of the world’s population. Its origin is related to different aspects, it does not have a single cause. Some authors consider that obesity is an effect of the environment where we grow up. From an epigenetic point of view, our genes already have a predisposition that depends on our mother’s state of mind, the type of food she eats during gestation and the predominant state of mind.
From the psychological point of view, obesity and overweight are considered an effect or consequence of the emotional environment in which we live. Since we are children, we learn to substitute the lack of affection, affection or love through food; thus, creating an illusion of satisfaction or a feeling of being full and loved.
Our culture associates all celebrations, pleasures and good times with the presence and ingestion of food. However, when a person ingests food with people who generate stress or with negative talks or with toxic relationships; it is very likely that the food intake is excessive, without conscience and above all with an affective distortion. At that moment, people tend to avoid the discomfort that is experienced during breakfast, lunch or dinner and an excessive intake is produced.
This is why we recommend 5 psychological aspects:
- Create a new relationship with food.
- Encourage pleasant environments to eat food.
- Identify if I have something that worries me and get closer to the real solution and not
a substitute through food. - Exercise, little but constant.
- Be aware of what foods do me good and what foods do me harm in my mood, body
and thoughts.
